Why Spring is the Best Time for a Yard Cleanup

Spring is finally here, and the last snow has melted away! Before you start your next gardening project, take some time to do a spring cleanup to prepare your yard, grass, and soil for a productive season!

Benefits of a Yard Cleanup

Your yard has been through a lot this winter, between rapidly changing temperatures, snow, and dry spells. A cleanup will help:

  • Remove debris left over from spring, which can become weighed down under excessive moisture and prevent the grass underneath from receiving adequate nutrients. This can include leaves that fell after your fall cleanup, sticks and twigs that were weighed down under the snow, and other matter that blew into your yard.
  • Aerate your lawn. After being compressed by heavy snow all winter, your grass will need to be aerated to let in oxygen and other nutrients while planting. In addition, aeration will allow roots to grow deeper, leading to a more green, lush lawn.
  • Remove dead grass. Dethatching may also occur during your cleanup, removing dead grass to expose your soil to more sunlight, water, and oxygen and help your healthy grass grow.
  • Redefining the edges of your garden beds may have been altered due to snow and rain throughout the winter.

A cleanup now will prepare your yard for the rest of the gardening work you may be planning for the rest of the spring, including planting and hardscaping. Because your grass will be healthier, you can see greener grass, more abundantly flowering plants, and more nutritious vegetables in your harvest.
