Summer is on its way, and it’s time to start seriously thinking about planning your garden and planting seeds for blossoming. With the Massachusetts climate, it’s essential to make sure you plant things that can bloom over the season in strategic locations in your yard. Follow these tips as you plan out your garden!

Determine What You Can Successfully Plant
You will need to determine what flowers or vegetables are in season before you plant. Some vegetables, such as spinach, cabbage, and onions, have long planting seasons throughout the summer. Others, like tomatoes, need to be planted in a shorter span for proper growth. Certain annuals have similar seasons.
Plan Around the Available Space in Your Yard
You only have so much space in your yard. Assess the available room and space available. You don’t want to plan for an 8×8 garden if you only have comfortable space for a 6×6 or 4×4. After designating the area available for a garden, determine what you want to plant in the space and where. Ensure you do not overplant, as too many seeds can drain nutrients quickly and affect the other plants. Sketching out your ideas can help prevent overplanting.
Start Planting
After you have the needed materials, it’s time to start planting! Make sure you leave enough space for each seed to develop roots and access enough nutrients for a successful garden. If you are planting vegetables, check them often for growth and see if they are ready for harvest. Take a look at our vegetable garden to get some inspiration.
