When Is The Best Time to Start Seeding My Lawn?

As your yard begins to thaw from late winter freezes, you may notice patchy grass areas. Planting seasons vary throughout the country, but there are two periods of time when it is best to plant grass seeds in Massachusetts: early spring and early fall. If you want to seed your lawn, it’s best to start in April and May or wait until September. It should be cool in order for the seed to go without constant watering.

How Do I Seed My Lawn?

If you are overseeding a lawn with patches, begin by mowing the grass as close to the ground as possible. Make sure any debris is removed from the area to allow the seeds full access to the air and soil they need. Loosen the top ¼ inch of soil, so it is not compacted and will allow the seeds to take root. Test the soil’s acidity before beginning to seed. If the acidity is below 6.0, you may need to add lime to the soil. Ideally, the acidity will be between 6.0-7.5. After removing rocks and sticks and filling holes with soil, add a layer of compost to provide additional nutrients to the seeds. After spreading the seeds, fertilize your lawn. Do not use weed killers for several weeks because they can cause the seeds to fail.
