As fall progresses, the ground will begin to freeze over. If you have perennials in your garden, it is important to prepare your plants for the change in weather so they can bloom next spring. One thing that you can do is to schedule a fall clean-up to be prepared.
There are many benefits and things you can do to winterize your garden. First, remove any plant debris that can act as a home for pests or diseases over the winter. Cutting and pruning any dead or dying foliage will limit the grooming you will have to do before planting season begins, especially with trees close to your house. Pruning low-hanging or close branches protects the health of your tree, which can be shocked by the sudden loss of overburdened branches, as well as keep the branches from collapsing into your roof or windows, potentially causing structural damage.
Thoroughly weed out invasive plants in your garden, and keep them away from your compost pile in a covered receptacle. If you leave seeds from weeds in your compost pile, they are more likely to grow back and wreak havoc on your garden. Add an extra layer of mulch to bulbs before an expected frost to protect them through the winter.
Does your garden feature evergreens? Soak them throughout the fall, mainly if the season is dry. Keep an eye on them throughout the winter, and continue watering them as needed. Wrap evergreens and shrubs around your home in fabric or burlap before a long freeze. Using plastic can cause your plant to overheat or suffocate. Make sure your water pump does not freeze, and store it inside if you think freezing over is possible.
